The Ken Robertson Memorial Club Classic 2024

He must have been looking down on us as over 100 MDCC members road the 3 routes of the Dartmoor Classic Sportive in honour of their former stalwart. With the HQ at Newton Abbot Rugby Club and ages ranging from 9 to 80 the members from top racers to club social riders took on either a 39 mile, 67 mile or 109 mile ride around Dartmoor on an absolutely glorious day.

Starting early at 0630 to gain the most favourable conditions the members road these routes unsupported with little incident and after their caffeine fix at the start they were off on some pretty challenging rides.

Many hours later they arrived back at the finish to receive their commemorative medal and other rewards along with a free one course meal with the bar open, all provided free by the club.

Whilst eating their meal they were able to watch the ‘Queen’ stage of the Giro d’Italia in which club honorary member Harrison Wood riding for the French Cofidis team spent over 1 hour in the leading group of 6 taking his turn to lead. The group decreased to 4 before he dropped away back into the pack. An outstanding ride by a rider who’s beginning to move through the levels to show much more prominently in these Grand Tours. It is one of the most joyous days of the annual calendar when such a mix of riders get together to honour their former VP who passed away in December 2022, he would be so proud.
