Flying start to the SW series road and MTB

Mid Devon Cycling club welcome back racing at the Torbay Velopark for 2020 season for a early season test, with some of the best South, South West and Welsh riders across all age groups. Racing today was over two stages one longer race and one shorter race. 

Mid Devon youth have worked very hard over the winter riders racing development and it showed today with a good number of racers taking part.Under 8 Boy’s saw Ben Ward continue his winning ways from dominating the cyclocross season. Maddy Woodger came 2nd overall to new club mate Lauren Fox coming in 1st, Sister  Eva Fox came 1st in the under 12 girls giving the Boys some good competition over the two races.

Birthday boy Jacob Start had the best result from the under 12’s come in 4th in the second race to com 5th over all Edward Fraile-Whysall was 6th Bayley Woodger was 7th Under 14 boys Noah Thomas had a good day coming in with a second group both races.The under 16 boys saw a very competitive field of 35 riders Calum Starts had to very strong races coming in 4th and 8th saw him 7th overall. Other strong rides were from Archie Goodwin, Reuben Heal and Jacob Thomas. 

Sunday saw the MDCC MTB youth out in force at the first SW Series race at Woodbury Common.  On a wet, slippery and long course. Under 8 Ben and Charlotte Ward had strong rides. Bayley Woodger came in 4th in the under 12 boys beating some strong riders. Molly Lane, Grace Ward and Anna Lane put in strong performances in a large field of under 16 riders.  After a hectic start the 3 girls sat together for part of the first lap before splitting and completing a MDCC 1, 2, 3 in the Juvenile female category with Anna 1st, Molly 2nd and Grace completing the podium with 3rd.  Overall they finished 1st, 2nd and 4th in the under 16 female field.  Hopefully the girls will be off to Hadleigh Farm next weekend to compete in the first round of the National Series at the Olympic venue.

MDCC Road Racing Youth

The circuit season has arrived after several races being cancelled due to bad weather. Mid Devon Raced at two different venues on Saturday.


7 riders headed off to Wheal Jane in windy but dry conditions.  Maddy Woodger under 10’s started her season bottom of her new age group but managed a podium place coming in 3rd. 


Bayley Woodger under 12 started his road campaign in his new age group feeling under the weather but managed a great 2nd place.


Grace Ward started her first ever circuit race showing her strength and versatility across the different disciplines by winning the under 14’s girls.

Noah Thomas under 14’s had a good strong race after having a break from racing for 10 months by finishing 3rd brother Jake Thomas under 16 also enjoyed a good comeback race by coming in 2nd.

1st year Junior Harry Jukes claimed his first podium in his first race as a senior in cat 3/4 race coming 2nd. 


Jason Kettle enjoyed a good start to the year with a win in the masters category. 

This was a great opening race for these riders all making the podiums in their age groups. 

Odd Down

Two under 16’s Callum Start and Ruben Heal went to Odd Down for the 1st round of the South series with a very strong field  of 35. Riders saw a fast pace set with both lads attacking off the front, Reuben was away for nearly two laps whilst Callum sat at the front and limited any other attacks. It all went down to the last lap and on the second to last corner Reuben was in a crash, whilst Callum contested the long sprint and got 8th. Reuben is ok and will be ready to go again next week.

Next week we see the South and the South West series coming to Torbay Velopark on Saturday for a stage race stating at 10:30 with all age groups included, we are expecting a good Mid Devon turn out. 

On Sunday will see the clubs MTB riders take on the first round of the South West xc MTB series.

Offroad Road Racing Youth

Icebreaker Series Newport & Cannock winter classic MTB

Two Mid Devon Youth went to Newport velodrome on Saturday to try the ever popular Icebreaker Series.  Now in its 10th year, the series comprises of 2 rounds of endurance based Omniums for youth riders. Each round includes scratch, elimination and points races for each category. Bayley (age 10) was in under 12 category and Grace Ward (age 12) was in the under 14 category both enjoyed the challenge finding it hard to get a good track position in a large field of riders at speeds over 24mph, both improved across each race throughout the Omnium. 

Both riders would like to thank Mid Devon Cycling club for supporting them with club bikes and South West British Cycling for the development training session before this event. 

Cannock winter classic MTB

Sunday saw 3 riders start their MTB season making a long trip to Cannock for the winter classic. On a very wet and muddy course made riding conditions very difficult 2 new club members Anna Lane and Molly Lane both showed good early form along side Grace Ward coming straight off the back of racing on the track at Newport. All three rider are under 14’s but at this event they are riding in the under 16’s with riders 3 years older Anna came 3rd, Molly Lane 7th and Grace 8th this is great achievement from the three of them in a strong field.

SW Regional Cyclocross Champs – Youth Report

A team of 8 very successful MDCC youth riders went to the South West regional championship in Taunton picking up six medals and crowning 3 South West Champions.

The course was a new venue and gave all the riders a good challenge. There were three youth races in total with different age categories within them, to get MDCC off to a good start saw Ben Ward take gold medal and stay unbeaten this season in the under 8 boys, sister Charlotte Ward got a Silver medal in the under 8 girls.

In race two came our second gold of the day with Matt Holmes in the under 10 boys also keeping his unbeaten run going. Under 10 girls Maddy Woodger just missed out on the medals coming 4th with a strong ride with brother Bayley getting a bronze medal in the under 12 boys continuing his good run of form, also in the under 12 boys Jacob Start had a his best race of the season coming in 5th.

In Race 3  Grace Ward had a strong ride picking up a Bronze medal despite having up a puncture on the last lap. Under 16 boy saw Calum Starts ride his best race of the season taking on a strong team of 5 Dartmoor Velo riders and coming out on top with a Gold medal.

SW Youth Cyclocross Round 8 – Redruth

Round 8 of the South West cyclocross league was at Redruth School, weather was sunny with a very cold strong wind and mud which the Mid Devon youth made light of work of the conditions.

The domination of the under 8 and 10 boys continues with Ben Ward under 8 and Matthew Holmes under 10 both making it eighth out of eight each just needing one more win at round nine witch is hosted by Mid Devon at Torbay Velopark on Sunday 5th January to take their age group categories.

Under 8 Charlotte Ward came in 6th but this still sees her sitting in 2nd over all in the series, Under 10 girl Maddy Woodger came in 4th which takes her to 3rd over all in the series.

Under 12 boys saw Bayley Woodger take another podium position coming in 3rd allowing him to creep in to 3rd place overall in the series. Jacob Start had a crash on the second lap that saw him lose time but still managed a good 7th place seeing him retain his 5th place in the series. 

Under 14 girl Grace Ward came in 4th holding on to 2nd place in the series. Callum Start had a very strong race coming in 2nd and moving in to 4th in the series.

We move away from the league next week to the South West Cyclo-Cross Regional Championship at Pontispool Equine Sports Centre Taunton on the 8th December.

Round 7 – South West Cyclocross – Falmouth

MDCC youth headed to Falmouth Bike Park for the seventh round of the South West Cyclo-cross league on Sunday 17 Nov 2019.

The domination of the under 8 and 10 boys continues with Ben Ward under 8 and Matthew Holmes under 10 both making it seven wins out of seven, on the hardest course of the season. The bike park is based on the side of a hill which makes it very challenging. 1st year under 12 Bayley Woodger had his best result of the season so far seeing off many older riders to take 2nd in the category. Grace Ward continued her fine form with another 2nd place in the under 14 girls.

SW Cyclocross – 6th Round Escot

6th Round Escot Cyclocross on Sunday saw the sun come out on a very wet and muddy course with another very good turnout in all categories from across the region.

Under 8 Ben Ward was in great form and once again continues his winning ways in all rounds. Keeping the winning way going Matt Holmes is also still unbeaten this season in the under 10 boys with another solid performance.

In the Under 14 girls, Grace Ward came 3rd in a very strong field. Under 16 Callum Start worked hard throughout his race and after a dramatic sprint into the last corner came out on top to take 3rd place. Well done to all the riders results below.

SW Cyclocross Round 5 Bishop Fox School

A great day for MDCC youth as they headed to Bishop Fox School in Taunton for 5 round of the South West Cyclocross  series. On a muddy and slippery course in the sunshine, there were big numbers in all the age categories showing how popular cyclocross is in the South West.

Birthday boy Ben Ward made it five out of Five win’s in the under 8’s sister Charlotte age 5 had a great race coming 2nd in the under 8 girls. Keeping the winning run going Matt Holmes won the under 10 boys race. Under 12 Boy Bayley Woodger made the podium for the first time in this age category coming 3rd. Under 14 girl Grace Ward showed her hard work paying of coming 2nd.

Mid Devon Youth headed to Newnham Park

Mid Devon Youth headed to Newnham Park for the fourth round of the South West Cyclo-cross league with eleven rounds in total and many of the top spots currently held by MDCC riders for the series. 

The course was wet and muddy after the heavy rain this week. The under 8’s started the day with Ben Ward winning the boys making it 4 wins out of 4 with, Benjamin Simcock 4th and Fredrik Simcock 12th.

Under 8 girls Charlotte Ward was 4th. Under 10 boys saw Matt Holmes winning again keeping his unbeaten run going showing his dominance in this category.

Under 10 girl Maddy Woodger 6th but holds on to 3rd in the series. Under 12 boys saw Bayley Woodger 4th again for the 3rd time this season,

Jacob Start was 7th. Under 14 girl Grace Ward was 4th in a very strong field.

Under 16 boy Callum Start was 4th with many parts of the course at this stage being cut up and very muddy.

The next round is next week at Bishop Fox School, Taunton.

Youth report Coxleigh Barton 3rd Rd SW Cyclo-cross

On Sunday, 06 Oct 2019 Mid Devon cycling club youth went to Coxleigh Barton for the 3rd round of the South West Cyclo-cross league.

Under 8 boy Ben Ward kept up his winning ways in all three rounds and leading the series with Sister Charlotte coming 4th in under 8 girls.

Matt Holmes wins another round keeping his unbeaten run in the series going despite riding with a cold in the under 10 boys. Maddy Woodger keeps her good start to the series going with taking another 3rd and brother Bayley Woodger came in 4th once again this year in the under 12 boys with Jacob Start coming in 7th having another solder ride.

Under 14’s girl Grace Ward that has just joined the club to develop her cycling skills across all disciplines came 2nd with a great performance.

The next round is Newnham Park Plymouth, Sunday 13th Oct 2019
